Irish Mail on Sunday columnist Niamh Walsh has slammed the Department of Agriculture's handling of the discovery of a mass greyhound grave in County Kildare.
Writing in the newspaper on 19 February 2023, she said that the Department's handing over of the investigation to Greyhound Racing Ireland was "akin to putting Dracula in charge of conserving supplies in a blood bank."
The shocking discovery of the greyhound remains was made in a bog in Newbridge, County Kildare. The gruesome scene, just 2km from Newbridge Greyhound Stadium, included skulls, bones and skeletons. Among the remains, a greyhound muzzle was visible.
Responding to a Dail Question from Paul Murphy TD last month, the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue stated: "It was not possible to determine when these animals had died but TRAUMATIC INJURY evident in six of the dogs, was the most probable cause of death."
"It has now emerged that the remains were examined by the Department of Agriculture's veterinary laboratory in Celbridge, Co. Kildare and were sent forward for further testing to see if the dogs and their owners could be identified," Niamh Walsh wrote in her column today. "As if further proof were needed that the Department of Agriculture has scant regard for animal welfare, it passed the bones to Greyhound Racing Ireland which carried out DNA testing. And GRI could not trace the owners."
"It comes as no surprise that 'to date, no match has been found and the GRI investigation into the matter is ongoing,'" she added. "The Department of Agriculture's efforts are akin to putting Dracula in charge of conserving supplies in a blood bank."

Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to STOP the massive grants that are propping up this cruel, dog-killing gambling activity. Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has received €309 million in funding, including €19.2 million for 2021, €17.6 million for 2022 and €18.2 million for 2023. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
