Over 100 greyhounds ended up in dog pounds around Ireland last year, the latest statistics reveal.
The local authority figures for “stray and unwanted greyhounds (i.e. those bearing ear identification tattoos)” show that 91 greyhounds were “surrendered” to pounds last year. Thirteen stray greyhounds also entered pounds and there was 1 greyhound who had been seized.
Out of the total of 105 greyhounds, 3 were reclaimed, 18 were rehomed and 83 were transferred from the pounds to dog welfare groups.

The 2021 national figure for surrendered greyhounds was the highest since 2017:
2021: 91 surrendered (+13 strays, 1 seized) - 1 euthanised
2020: 17 surrendered (+ 26 strays, 0 seized) - 1 euthanised
2019: 29 surrendered (+19 strays, 11 seized) - 5 euthanised
2018: 76 surrendered (+35 strays and 2 seized) - 53 euthanised
In 2017, there were 180 greyhounds surrendered to pounds, 32 strays taken in and 3 seized. 80 greyhounds were euthanised that year. In 2016, 234 were surrendered, 46 strays, 4 seized and 152 euthanised. In 2016, there were 300 greyhounds surrendered, 56 strays and 10 seized and 203 euthanised.

ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to end the state funding that is keeping the dying greyhound “industry” afloat.
Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has received over €309 million in funding, including €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. Another €18.2 million has been allocated in Budget 2023. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
