I was shocked but not surprised to learn of the discovery of greyhound skeletons in a County Kildare bog, just 2km from Newbridge Greyhound Racing Stadium.
The skulls and bones were found by a member of the public who had been walking in the area.
In 2019 an RTÉ Investigates documentary, Greyhounds Running For Their Lives, revealed that huge numbers of underperforming or unwanted greyhounds are killed. Around 6,000 greyhounds go “missing” each year.
Shallow graves of greyhound have been unearthed in the past at various locations, but this latest one must be hugely embarrassing to an embattled and increasingly toxic industry. The government should step in now and end State funding of the "sport." Not a single cent of taxpayers’ money should be propping up this Chamber of Horrors.
The greyhound is a dog like any other. It belongs on the couch or in the garden, not being made to run for its life. It should be taken for exercise walks like other dogs…not to a secluded spot in the countryside to be shot in the head or whacked with a shovel.

Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to STOP the massive grants that are propping up this cruel, dog-killing gambling activity. Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has received €309 million in funding, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
