Petition updateIrish Government: Stop Giving Millions of Euro to Cruel Greyhound Racing118 greyhounds injured, 45 killed at races in 2022
Irish Council Against Blood SportsMullingar, Ireland
Jul 15, 2022

Suffering and death is continuing at tracks around Ireland, with 118 greyhounds confirmed injured and 45 dead at races since the beginning of the year.

The sickening statistics were obtained by Joan Collins TD further to a Dail Question to Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue and have prompted fresh calls on the government to stop the massive state grants that are keeping racing afloat.

A breakdown of the figures covering the period 1st January to the end of June 2022

Clonmel - 7 greyhounds injured, 5 killed by track vet
Cork - 9 greyhounds injured, 4 killed by track vet
Dundalk - 6 greyhounds injured, 5 killed by track vet
Enniscorthy - 6 greyhounds injured, 2 killed by track vet
Galway - 8 greyhounds injured, 4 killed by track vet
Kilkenny - 8 greyhounds injured, 2 killed by track vet + 1 racing fatality (collapsed)
Limerick - 12 greyhounds injured, 5 killed by track vet
Mullingar - 10 greyhounds injured, 3 killed by track vet
Newbridge - 8 greyhounds injured, 3 killed by track vet
Shelbourne Park - 21 greyhounds injured, 0 killed
Thurles - 6 greyhounds injured, 3 killed by track vet
Tralee - 1 greyhound injured, 0 greyhounds killed
Waterford - 9 greyhounds injured, 4 killed by track vet
Youghal - 7 greyhounds injured, 4 killed by track vet

The injuries suffered by the 44 greyhounds who were destroyed by track vets were fractured/injured hock (22), fractured leg (15) and fractured/injured wrist (7).

The greyhounds who were treated had suffered cuts, dislocated toes, fractured hock/leg/shoulder/toe/wrist, hip injury, muscle injury/tear, shoulder injury/wound, sprained wrist and tendon injury.

Deputy Collins (Independents 4 Change, Dublin South-Central) has also been told that in addition to the greyhounds injured and killed at races, there were “14 greyhounds injured during official and unofficial trials at RCE [Greyhound Racing Ireland] licensed stadia” and five of them were killed. Three were “euthanised by attending track vets [and] 2 dogs were euthanised at nearby vets”.

Greyhounds injured at trials are at risk of prolonged suffering because there is no requirement for vets to be present. Greyhound Racing Ireland has stated that “a veterinary surgeon is not on duty for official trials or unofficial trials, but the contact details of nearby veterinary clinics are posted in the weigh room of each of the RCÉ licensed stadia.”

Deputy Collins enquired about the racing fatalities and if post-mortems were carried out. She was told: “Three greyhounds were lost due to racing fatalities. One of these greyhounds died after racing, two after trialling. All three animals were submitted for necropsy examination. Of these 3 animals, one died from cardiac failure, one died from a fractured skull and one died as a result of an aortic tear.”

The latest figures from Greyhound Racing Ireland follow shocking statistics for 2021 showing that 351 greyhounds were injured at races and 154 of them were killed. The number of greyhounds who lost their lives at tracks in 2021 was the highest since records began in 2014.

The 2022 figures bring to 2,853 the number of greyhounds injured and 971 the number killed on race days at Irish tracks since 2014.

The stats only cover reported injuries and deaths which occurred at races and do not include the greyhounds injured at races and later killed elsewhere.

The fatality figures represent only the tip of the iceberg. As revealed in the award-winning “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives” documentary, thousands of greyhounds are killed behind the scenes every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included disturbing scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

A damning report which Greyhound Racing Ireland attempted to hide, revealed that around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they don’t make the grade. The report estimated that, for example, a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were killed for “failure to produce qualifying times”, “failure to produce desired entry level times” and for an “unacceptable decline in performance”.

How many more dogs have to suffer and die before the Irish Government stops funding greyhound racing? A RED C opinion poll commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports confirms that a two-thirds majority want the funding stopped (with just 16% in favour of it continuing), while petitions urging the government to end the funding have more than 400,000 signatures.

ACTION ALERT

Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to end the state funding that is keeping the dying greyhound “industry” afloat.

Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.

Please contact your local TDs and urge them to oppose this funding. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
