A greyhound who suffered a skull fracture and another with an aortic tear are among the dogs who have died at racing trials around Ireland.
Disturbing details about the suffering and death at trial events have come to light for the first time, thanks to Dail Questions from TDs Mick Barry and Joan Collins.
These additional victims of the cruel greyhound “industry” have previously gone unacknowledged due to the fact that before last November, Greyhound Racing Ireland did not document injuries or deaths at trials.
In his Dail Question to the Minister for Agriculture, Deputy Mick Barry asked for information on “the numbers of greyhounds that suffered injuries, died or were killed at official trials, unofficial trials and sales auctions in the past five years by date and location; the nature of the injuries and deaths; if the affected greyhounds were treated or killed on site or elsewhere.”
In response, Greyhound Racing Ireland revealed that in the past seven months, 19 greyhounds suffered injuries at trials and 10 of them died or were killed.
From 1st November 2021 to 31 December 2021, 5 greyhounds were injured at GRI-licensed tracks. Three of them were “put to sleep”. One of the three was destroyed by a track vet at Clonmel stadium, while the other two were taken away from Newbridge and Limerick tracks and put to sleep by a vet elsewhere.
At trials between 1st January 2022 and 31st May 2022, 14 more greyhounds were injured.
In response to her Dail Question, Joan Collins TD (Independents 4 Change, Dublin South-Central) was told that out of the 14 greyhounds injured during the official and unofficial trials, “3 greyhounds were euthanised by attending track vets, 2 dogs were euthanised at nearby vets”.
It was revealed that two more greyhounds also “died during or immediately after racing” - at Curraheen Park and Dundalk tracks.
“The remains of both animals were submitted for post-mortem examination - of the two animals, one had sustained a skull fracture and the other an aortic tear,” Greyhound Racing Ireland told Mick Barry TD.
Greyhounds injured at trials are at risk of prolonged suffering because there is no requirement for vets to be present. Greyhound Racing Ireland has stated that “a veterinary surgeon is not on duty for official trials or unofficial trials, but the contact details of nearby veterinary clinics are posted in the weigh room of each of the RCÉ licensed stadia.”
As well as deaths at trials, greyhounds are also continuing to suffer and die at races. Sickening statistics obtained this month by Joan Collins TD show that in the first five months of the year at races around Ireland, 90 greyhounds were confirmed injured and 33 dead.
In 2021, 351 greyhounds were injured at races and 154 of them were killed. The number of greyhounds who lost their lives at tracks in 2021 was the highest since records began in 2014.
The 2022 figures bring to over 2,853 the number of greyhounds injured and 971 the number killed at races in Ireland since 2014.
The stats only cover reported injuries and deaths which occurred at tracks and do not include the greyhounds injured at races and later killed elsewhere.
The fatality figures represent only the tip of the iceberg. As revealed in the award-winning “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives” documentary, thousands of greyhounds are killed behind the scenes every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included disturbing scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM
A damning report which Greyhound Racing Ireland attempted to hide, revealed that around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they don’t make the grade. The report estimated that, for example, a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were killed for “failure to produce qualifying times”, “failure to produce desired entry level times” and for an “unacceptable decline in performance”.
How many more dogs have to suffer and die before the Irish Government stops funding greyhound racing? A RED C opinion poll commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports confirms that a two-thirds majority want the funding stopped (with just 16% in favour of it continuing), while petitions urging the government to end the funding have more than 400,000 signatures.
ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to end the state funding that is keeping the dying greyhound “industry” afloat.
Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Please contact your local TDs and urge them to oppose this funding. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
