Suffering and death is continuing at tracks around Ireland, with 90 greyhounds confirmed injured and 33 dead since the beginning of the year.
The sickening statistics were obtained by Joan Collins TD further to a Dail Question to Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue and have prompted fresh calls on the government to stop the massive state grants that are keeping racing afloat.
“From January 1st 2022 to May 28th 2022, there have been 90 greyhounds injured at RCE [Greyhound Racing Ireland] licensed stadia on race nights,” Deputy Collins was told. “In addition to this, there have been 14 greyhounds injured during official and unofficial trials at RCE licensed stadia.”
Deputy Collins (Independents 4 Change, Dublin South-Central) also asked how many injured greyhounds were destroyed by track vets.
She was told that “of the greyhounds injured on race nights, 32 greyhounds were euthanised by the attending track veterinary surgeons and there has been one racing fatality.”
Out of the 14 greyhounds injured during official and unofficial trials, “3 greyhounds were euthanised by attending track vets, 2 dogs were euthanised at nearby vets”.
Deputy Collins enquired about the racing fatalities and if post-mortems were carried out. She was told: “Three greyhounds were lost due to racing fatalities. One of these greyhounds died after racing, two after trialling. All three animals were submitted for necropsy examination. Of these 3 animals, one died from cardiac failure, one died from a fractured skull and one died as a result of an aortic tear.”
The latest figures from GRI follow shocking statistics for 2021 showing that 351 greyhounds were injured at races and 154 of them were killed. The number of greyhounds who lost their lives at tracks in 2021 was the highest since records began in 2014.
The 2022 figures bring to over 2,853 the number of greyhounds injured and 971 the number killed on race days at Irish tracks since 2014.
The stats only cover reported injuries and deaths which occurred at races and do not include the greyhounds injured at races and later killed elsewhere.
Responding to a separate Dail Question from Mick Barry TD (People Before Profit-Solidarity, Cork North-Central), Greyhound Racing Ireland revealed that from 1st November 2021 to 31st December 2021, there were 5 greyhounds injured [at trials] on RCÉ licenced tracks”. One of these greyhounds was “put to sleep by track vet” at Clonmel stadium, while two of the others who were injured at Newbridge and Limerick tracks were “put to sleep at vets”.
Greyhounds injured at trials are at risk of prolonged suffering because there are no vets present.
“A veterinary surgeon is not on duty for official trials or unofficial trials, but the contact details of nearby veterinary clinics are posted in the weigh room of each of the RCÉ licenced stadia,” Greyhound Racing Ireland told Deputy Barry.
The fatality figures represent only the tip of the iceberg. As revealed in the award-winning “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives” documentary, thousands of greyhounds are killed behind the scenes every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included disturbing scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM
A damning report which Greyhound Racing Ireland attempted to hide, revealed that around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they don’t make the grade. The report estimated that, for example, a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were killed for “failure to produce qualifying times”, “failure to produce desired entry level times” and for an “unacceptable decline in performance”.
How many more dogs have to suffer and die before the Irish Government stops funding greyhound racing? A RED C opinion poll commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports confirms that a two-thirds majority want the funding stopped (with just 16% in favour of it continuing), while petitions urging the government to end the funding have more than 400,000 signatures.
ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to end the state funding that is keeping the dying greyhound “industry” afloat.
Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Please contact your local TDs and urge them to oppose this funding. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
