Disgusted to see a "Rose of Tralee"-related event at a greyhound track, despite all the shocking revelations about cruelty and killing (including the annual culling of thousands of dogs who aren't fast enough to win races).

The Tralee Today website has reported: "As is traditional for the past number of years, many of the Kerry Roses gathered at Kingdom Greyhound Stadium for some photos and a night of racing. There are 24 ladies from all over the county confirmed to take part this year and most of them were at the stadium on Friday night." http://traleetoday.ie/photos-kerry-rose-contestants-enjoy-night-at-the-dogs-2/

The 7 May 2022 report includes a photo of the Kerry Rose contestants at the track posing with a "Go greyhound racing" sign.

The Tralee track is one of the worst in Ireland for injuries and deaths. 181 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 77 died or were killed by a track vet over the past seven years alone, including 23 injuries and 13 deaths last year. At tracks around Ireland since 2014, at least 2,763 greyhounds suffered injuries and 938 died or were killed

A partnership between Greyhound Racing Ireland and Rose of Tralee had previously been ended in 2019 following the broadcast of RTE’s shocking “Greyhounds Running for Their Lives” which revealed that thousands of greyhounds are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough. It included shocking scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM

A damning report which Greyhound Racing Ireland attempted to hide, revealed that around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they don’t make the grade. The report estimated that, for example, a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were killed for “failure to produce qualifying times”, “failure to produce desired entry level times” and for an “unacceptable decline in performance”.

Kingdom Greyhound Track is currently listed as a festival sponsor on the Rose of Tralee website. The site states: “nothing beats the excitement of greyhound racing” and includes contact details for Kingdom track.

Shame on the Rose of Tralee for disregarding the suffering and death and associating with this cruel dog-killing activity.

ACTION ALERT

URGE THE ROSE OF TRALEE TO DISASSOCIATE FROM GREYHOUND RACING

Contact the Rose of Tralee festival committee and urge them to show compassion and permanently disassociate from cruel greyhound racing.
