Disgusted to see East Ferry Rowing Club holding a benefit night at Youghal greyhound track where dogs suffer and die.

The club's fundraiser at the track took place on 18 April 2022 https://www.facebook.com/East-Ferry-Rowing-Club-156523611110175

In the past seven years alone, 73 greyhounds suffered injuries at Youghal track and 35 died or were killed by a track vet.

At tracks around Ireland since 2014, at least 2,763 greyhounds suffered injuries and 938 died or were killed. The Irish Greyhound Board figures are based on “reported” injuries and deaths, suggesting that the actual number could be even higher. They do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere, or the thousands of greyhounds who are killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races.

Among the victims at tracks were a greyhound who collapsed after a race and died of a heart attack, a greyhound who was carried away bleeding with a leg bone “popped out”, a greyhound who “collided with a boundary wall and died on impact” and greyhounds who suffered broken necks and died.

While sports clubs are forced to fundraise, dog-killing greyhound racing receives massive grants from the government. Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. It’s time for the government to stop the funding and redirect the money to the many sports clubs, community groups and animal welfare charities that are crying out for support
