Broken neck, fatal spinal injury, cardiac arrest: There are renewed calls on the government to ban greyhound racing after more shocking details have emerged about fatalities at greyhound tracks.
The seven “fatalities” were among 154 deaths at race meetings around Ireland in 2021, with the other 147 dogs destroyed by track vets after suffering injuries. The number of greyhounds who lost their lives at races in 2021 is the highest since records began in 2014.
Additional details about the fatalities have come to light this week following a Dail Question from Paul Murphy TD (Solidarity-People Before Profit, Dublin South West).
In its response, Greyhound Racing Ireland provided the following information:
On 8th February 2021 at Mullingar track, a greyhound collided with a boundary wall and died on impact. A leg injury is listed in GRI statistics.
On 19th April 2021 at Mullingar track, a greyhound fell at the first bend and died on impact with a boundary wall. The “nature of injury” was recorded as “shoulder/back/neck”
On 6th May 2021 at Limerick stadium, a greyhound collapsed and died after a race - a post mortem indicated cardiac arrest.
On 18th September 2021 at Shelbourne Park stadium, a greyhound suffered a fatal injury in a collision at the first bend – a post mortem “indicated broken neck”.
On 30th October 2021, at Waterford track, a greyhound collapsed and died after a race. A post mortem was carried out but “diagnosis not reached”
On 3rd December 2021 at Newbridge track, a greyhound collapsed and died after a race. A post mortem was carried out but “diagnosis not reached”
On 5th December 2021 at Clonmel track, a greyhound was knocked over in a race and suffered a fatal spinal injury (“diagnosis certified by track vet”).
The greyhound who died at Shelbourne Park on 18 September was previously identified as Deadly Samuri. He died with a “severe fracture of the neck” during a BoyleSports-sponsored race at the Dublin track.
A Greyhound Racing Ireland spokesperson told Brian Leddin TD (Green Party, Limerick City) last year that the greyhound, who was less than three years old, “sustained a serious injury” following a collision at the first bend. He said the dog “tumbled and did not get up” and “died soon after the fall”.
“The greyhound’s remains were removed to the Veterinary College in University College Dublin, where a full post-mortem examination was undertaken,” he stated. “The cause of death recorded on post-mortem was a severe fracture of neck.”
A photo obtained by ICABS shows a buggy vehicle carting the dead dog away before racing and gambling continued. Video footage of the fall has been hidden by Greyhound Racing Ireland and is unavailable to view on its website.
The 154 greyhounds who died at tracks were among 351 who suffered injuries. The latest figures bring to 2,763 the number of greyhounds injured and 938 the number killed at Irish tracks since 2014.
It should be noted that the Greyhound Racing Ireland stats only cover reported injuries and deaths which occurred at tracks and do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere. They also do not include greyhounds injured and/or killed at sales or official/unofficial trials.
The track figures represent only the tip of the iceberg. As revealed in the award-winning “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives” documentary, thousands of greyhounds are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough. It featured shocking scenes of dogs being delivered to a knackery where they were shot in the head and dumped in a skip. One shot dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM
A damning report which Greyhound Racing Ireland attempted to hide, revealed that around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they don’t make the grade. The report estimated that, for example, a total of 17,962 greyhounds were culled in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were killed for “failure to produce qualifying times”, “failure to produce desired entry level times” and for an “unacceptable decline in performance”.
How many more dogs have to suffer and die before the Irish Government stops the massive state grants that are keeping nasty greyhound racing afloat? A RED C opinion poll commissioned by the Irish Council Against Blood Sports and Greyhound Action Ireland confirms that a two-thirds majority want the funding stopped (with just 16% in favour of it continuing), while petitions urging the government to end the funding have more than 400,000 signatures.
ACTION ALERT
Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to end the state funding that is keeping the dying greyhound “industry” afloat.
Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Please contact your local TDs and urge them to oppose this funding. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
