The number of greyhounds being named in Ireland ahead of use in racing and coursing plummeted by 20 per cent last year, it has emerged.
In a report headed “BREEDING DECLINE TO IMPACT RACING”, the Greyhound Star website this week highlighted the massive drop which it says “presents a more immediate problem”.
“The fall in namings from 13,284 to 10,583 means the greyhound pool will eventually contract by around 20%,” it stated.
An overall downward trend in the number of greyhounds being bred continues to be observed. Greyhound Star is reporting that despite the number of litter registrations in Ireland for 2021 being 198 higher than in 2020, “the continued decline seems reasonably uniform after the 2020 blip”.
It previously reported that the number of greyhound litters registered in 2020 “was the lowest in history – 1,962 – a decline of 15% on the previous year – which was itself the lowest figure ever.”
The downward trend in registrations and the 20 per cent fall in namings is further evidence that greyhound racing is a dying “industry”. The government should take note and move to stop funding this dog-killing activity which has increasingly been rejected by the public.
For example, attendance at tracks fell by 73% in 2020. As revealed in a Greyhound Racing Ireland annual report, the number of people visiting tracks dropped from 462,709 in 2019 to 126,376 in 2020 (a drop of 336,333).
“The reduction occurred due to the period of cessation of racing and the requirement to race behind closed doors for most of the year,” GRI declared in its report. However, this is not the full story - members of the public choosing to stay away from tracks also contributed to the reduction.
Before Covid-related restrictions in March 2020, greyhound racing had already recorded significant drops in attendance - as confirmed by an Indecon report commissioned by Greyhound Racing Ireland itself.

In January and February 2020, numbers dropped by 7,232 (30%) and 8,682 (28%) respectively, compared to the same period the previous year.
The authors of the Indecon report stated that the “greyhound industry is likely to experience a continued decline in attendance levels” and that the decline will “continue or accelerate”.
“The greyhound racing industry in Ireland has witnessed a significant decline in attendance over the last decade,” it stated. “While 1.1 million attended races in 2008, this fell by 55% to just over 0.5 million by 2018.”
Last year, Greyhound Breeders Federation revealed that greyhound owners are continuing to abandon racing “in their droves”. Pointing to reduced prize money, the group said that “with the level of prize money that is being paid at the moment, there is no incentive for anyone to buy a greyhound”.
With a RED C opinion poll showing that a two-thirds majority in Ireland want the government to stop propping up greyhound racing with taxpayers’ money, and more than 400,000 signatures on petitions calling for the grants to be scrapped, the government must not hesitate to withdraw all support and finally let greyhound racing die a death.

Don’t go greyhound racing. Please join us in urging the government to end the state funding that is keeping the dying greyhound “industry” afloat.
Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
