“The eyewitness told me of how he has witnessed howling dogs in pain being put into trailers due to the lack of a vet being present at the track” - Sinn Fein Senator Lynn Boylan has highlighted even more suffering related to cruel greyhound racing.
In a Seanad speech on 2nd November 2021, Senator Boylan revealed that Greyhound Racing Ireland confirmed to her that, shockingly, “there are no vets present at either the public or the private trials that take place all across this country”.
This lack of veterinary supervision means dogs are suffering painful injuries at tracks and may be removed without treatment to a fate unknown.
Senator Boylan also uncovered the fact that Greyhound Racing Ireland does not document the injuries and deaths that occur at official or unofficial trial sessions at their own greyhound tracks or at private schooling tracks.
“It is convenient that there is no data collected and no vet is present to verify how many injuries and fatalities are taking place at the trials - particularly at the unofficial trials when it is young and inexperienced dogs - because, of course, that then will push the figures downwards.”
The only available figures are for the already high numbers of injuries and deaths at tracks during or after races.
Greyhound Racing Ireland’s sickening statistics show that since 2015, at least 2,315 greyhounds suffered injuries at tracks and 788 died or were killed. These do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks on race days and later killed elsewhere, or the thousands of greyhounds who are mercilessly killed every year behind the scenes because they are not fast enough to win races.
Senator Boylan called for “a permanent vet at every racecourse as is the case in Britain”, saying this would “allow for proper independent data on the number of injuries and deaths that are actually taking place at race tracks”.
She also challenged a lack of debate on the government’s latest allocation to horse and greyhound racing [€70.4 million for horse racing + €17.6 million for greyhound racing], saying “I find it incredible that we would have no discussion in this House on the allocation”.
The government is shamefully continuing to fund greyhound racing despite a RED C opinion poll confirming that a two-thirds majority want the funding stopped, with just 16% wanting it to continue.

Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020, €19.2 million for 2021 and €17.6 million for 2022. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
