Another 10 greyhounds suffered injuries and 4 more were killed at Shelbourne Park Stadium in July and August, it has been confirmed.
This brings to at least 31 the number of dogs injured at the track and 11 the number killed since the start of the year.
Greyhound Racing Ireland previously revealed that between January and June at the Dublin track, 21 greyhounds were injured and 7 killed. Updated stats provided to Paul Murphy TD show that there was no end to the suffering and death in July and August.
Greyhound Racing Ireland told Deputy Murphy that up to the end of August at Shelbourne Park, 31 greyhounds had been injured and 11 “put to sleep” by a track vet.
According to GRI, “the nature of the injuries and causes of death” were:
- Leg Injury: 7
- Hock Injury: 15
- Wrist Injury: 2
- Shoulder Injury: 2
- Cut: 2
- Foot / Toe Injury: 3
The deaths continued into September at Shelbourne Park when a greyhound died after suffering fatal injuries. The dog, named Deadly Samuri, is believed to have sustained a broken leg and neck.
Shelbourne Park - the capital’s last remaining track - is one of the worst in Ireland for injuries and deaths. At least 227 greyhounds have suffered injuries there and 58 died or were killed over the past seven years alone.
Among the many victims were a greyhound who collapsed and died in December 2020 after suffering a "haemorrhage into the abdomen from a rupture of the aorta", a greyhound who died of a heart attack after a race in August 2019 and another who was carried away bleeding with a leg bone "popped out".
Since 2015 at tracks around Ireland, at least 2,315 greyhounds suffered injuries and 788 died or were killed, including 169 injuries and 73 deaths in the first six months of 2021. The figures do not include the greyhounds injured at tracks and later killed elsewhere or the thousands of greyhounds who are killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races.
ACTION ALERT
STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING
Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland (formerly the Irish Greyhound Board) has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020 and another €19.2 million for 2021. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
Please contact your local TDs and urge them to oppose this funding. Visit the Oireachtas website for contact details for TDs https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/members/tds/?term=/ie/oireachtas/house/dail/33
