The doping of dogs in Ireland’s cruel greyhound racing was highlighted in a Sunday Times Letter to the Editor at the weekend.
“The only true positives in the greyhound racing industry are the drug positives,” Katie Corcoran of Greyhound Awareness Cork wrote. “Racing greyhounds have tested positive for prohibited substances such as cocaine, amphetamine and stanozolol or painkillers which mask injuries, resulting in further harm to the dogs.”
She went on to highlight that according to Greyhound Racing Ireland statistics, “up to 94 per cent of race starters are NOT drug tested”.

The Irish greyhound racing industry is overwrought about its inclusion in the junior Certificate curriculum ("Barking at wrong people on racing", Letters, last week). Surely if they have nothing to hide, they would welcome a bright light being shone on their activities?
However, the only true positives in the greyhound racing industry are the drug positives. Racing greyhounds have tested positive for prohibited substances such as cocaine, amphetamine and stanozolol or painkillers which mask injuries, resulting in further harm to the dogs.
According to the industry's statistics, up to 94 per cent of "race starters" are not drug tested.
One wonders about the real extent of continuous harm caused to these truly magnificent and affectionate dogs. We cannot allow their exploitation to continue.

Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland (formerly the Irish Greyhound Board) has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020 and another €19.2 million for 2021. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
