The manager of Shelbourne Park - Dublin’s last remaining greyhound track - has “left his role”, it has been reported.
According to the Greyhound Star website, Patrick Flynn left on Friday after nearly 12 years as a Sales, Marketing, Commercial and Operations Manager at the track. The reason for the departure remains unknown.
“No other details are forthcoming and I understand that his departure is subject to a gagging agreement,” Greyhound Star reported, adding “this news will come [as] a shock to many thousands of people within the industry who have experienced [his] enthusiasm, knowledge and drive.”
It went on to say that “despite cutbacks and serial mismanagement by the Irish Greyhound Board with its string of CEOs of various abilities and chairmen of questionable knowledge of, or passion for greyhound racing, Patrick and [his wife] kept Shelbourne on the road.”
In a 2019 interview with Greyhound Star, Patrick Flynn stated: “ It is still very tough running a greyhound track and we are dependent on other things that we do with the stadium, including a car parking business, which brings in a significant six figure sum every year.””
Prior to working at Shelbourne Park, he was a manager at Mullingar stadium and the now closed-down Harold’s Cross stadium. Before that, he “had a brief spell” at the now closed-down Dungannon Greyhound Stadium.
Shelbourne Park is one of the worst tracks in Ireland for greyhound injuries and deaths and has been the scene of numerous “Ban Greyhound Racing” protests. At least 217 greyhounds suffered injuries at the track and 54 died or were killed by a track vet over the past seven years alone, sickening Greyhound Racing Ireland statistics show.
Among the victims were a greyhound who collapsed and died in December 2020 after suffering a “haemorrhage into the abdomen from a rupture of the aorta”, a greyhound who died of a heart attack after a race in August 2019 and another who was carried away bleeding with a leg bone “popped out”.
Shelbourne Park saw a massive drop in attendance in the first two [pre-pandemic] months of last year. A May 2020 Indecon report commissioned by Greyhound Racing Ireland showed that more and more people are staying away from greyhound tracks, including Shelbourne Park. The report showed that the Dublin track sustained a 36% fall in attendance in January 2020 – down by 2,168 to 3,752, compared to the same month in 2019. Attendance continued to plummet at Shelbourne Park in February 2020 – compared to February 2019, it was down by 41% (3,730) to 5,240.
Indecon has predicted that the “greyhound industry is likely to experience a continued decline in attendance levels”.
