“The only way to stop the inherent cruelty of greyhound racing is a complete ban” - Read ICABS Campaign Director Aideen Yourell’s Letter to the Editor in the Sunday Times...

Barking at wrong people on racing
Letters, Sunday Times, 12 September 2021

James Norton wrongly castigates the Department of Education and Folens publishers for encouraging students to write to the minister for agriculture to have greyhound racing banned ("Greyhound industry's critics are barking up the wrong tree", Letters, last week). The textbook does not encourage students to write calling for a ban, but merely suggests asking for improvements in the welfare of greyhounds.

However, the only way to stop the inherent cruelty of greyhound racing is a complete ban. This is an industry that cannot be rehabilitated. Overbreeding will continue, resulting in many greyhounds being put down, abandoned or exported to countries with low welfare standards.

James Norton warns of the "insidious and gradual creep of animal rights activism in Ireland". Indeed, animal rights activism is steadily on the march, in a bid to stamp out all forms of animal abuse.
