A greyhound which Greyhound Racing Ireland is claiming was “rehomed as pet” has been found in a dreadful condition in Spain.
According to the GRI website, 4-year-old “Dirtbird Mac” who was used in racing at Dundalk Stadium and at tracks in Northern Ireland was “rehomed”. However, the dog was shamefully exported to Spain - a country where greyhounds are thrown down wells and hung from trees.
Ironically, his last race in Ireland before ending up in Spain was the “Support Greyhound Rehoming 335” race at Drumbo Park on 21st September 2019.
According to rescue group, Greyhound Protection UK, Dirtbird Mac was “exported to Spain for breeding and racing” the following month.
“Mac is apparently pretty mentally shut down and has the body of a very old dog - not of a four-year-old greyhound in his prime,” group spokesperson Kerry Lawrence wrote in a Facebook post. “He is lame on three legs and struggles to walk.”
“The racing industry in Ireland and the UK continue to keep exporting these amazing dogs knowing their fate and knowing they will have no retirement but will simply be used as machines,” Kerry Lawrence stated. “Spain as a country kills thousands and thousands of sighthounds a year so why is the greyhound racing industry still sending dogs there knowing this?”
She is calling on the public not to bet on greyhound racing, stressing that “it’s full of bullies” and it “relies on gentle greyhounds to make money from either racing the dogs, breeding the dogs or exporting the dogs”.
“Greyhound racing is outdated and needs to be banned there’s no place for a sport that relies on the over-breeding of innocent dogs to make money,” she added. “I think people forget at times that the noble greyhound is a dog like any other breed and deserves the same protection.”
This is the latest case of a “rehomed” greyhound ending up in horrendous conditions abroad.
In February, the Mail on Sunday reported that an Irish greyhound named Granard Swift - which the Irish Coursing Club was claiming was “rehomed-as-pet” - was actually “bought by a purchaser with a U.S. address, shipped to the UK, and then transported on to the Rajpur Coursing Club in Pakistan.” The 4-year-old greyhound is one of hundreds of Irish greyhounds exported for use in cruel coursing in Pakistan, a country which has been condemned for its appalling treatment of animals.
In April, we highlighted how Greyhound Racing Ireland was shamefully continuing to claim that a greyhound named Leonas Skylark was “REHOMED” despite knowing that the animal was exported to China, a country where greyhounds are beaten, boiled alive and hung on hooks at meat markets.
The latest revelation that a supposedly rehomed greyhound ended up in Spain casts further doubts on the credibility of the nasty greyhound industry’s rehoming figures.
ICABS has renewed its appeal to the government to stop all funding to greyhound racing and wind down what is an inherently cruel activity.

Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland (formerly the Irish Greyhound Board) has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020 and another €19.2 million for 2021. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
