The "Ban greyhound racing to end unnecessary deaths & suffering of racing dogs" petition urges the UK Government to "introduce legislation to abolish greyhound racing, via managed shutdown of activities, and ensure welfare of redundant dogs through a levy on the industry."
It points out that in 2019, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain confirmed that 4,970 greyhounds suffered injuries and there were 710 deaths (an average of 14 deaths per week). The previous year, almost 1,000 greyhounds died or were killed.
Around 80% of greyhounds used in racing in the UK originate in Ireland where thousands more are killed each year when found to be too slow to win races.
