An emaciated Irish greyhound with a "terrible injury to his leg" has been saved from certain death after being found straying on a road in Murcia, Spain.
Galgos del Sol Animal Rescue, who picked up the skinny greyhound with a broken hock, say that from identification tattoos on his ears, they believe the dog was exported to Spain from Ireland.
“Why is it that with tens of thousands of galgos abandoned every year on to the streets of Spain, we are now picking up Irish greyhounds,” Tina Solera, the founder and president of Galgos del Sol, asks in a video posted on Youtube on Friday. “We know this boy is from Ireland - he’s got two tattoos - one in each ear. The very strange thing about this case is that he has no microchip and it is the law that Irish greyhounds must have a microchip...He’s either come to Spain from Ireland with no microchip at all or it has been cut out here in Spain.”
“The very sad thing about this greyhound is that he has a terrible injury to his leg,” she continued. “This injury, the vet believes, is 4-5 months old, but he was registered still in Ireland in September 2020 which means he has come over in the last four months. Hundreds of Irish greyhounds are believed to be shamefully exported to Spain every year, despite the fact that in Spain, greyhounds/galgos are routinely shot, hung from trees and mercilessly thrown down wells to die when they have outlived their usefulness.
Among the other unfortunate Irish greyhounds to have previously ended up in Spain are Coreys Joy, who was filmed collapsed and exhausted “after being made to run next to a van for 18 miles”. Her rescuers described her as “completely broken mentally and physically”. Irish greyhound Josh (racing name “Daddys Cool”) was also rescued from Spain. The dog was found in “an awful condition” and is believed to have suffered whippings.

Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland (formerly the Irish Greyhound Board) has been granted more than a QUARTER OF A BILLION EUROS, including €16.8 million for 2020 and another €19.2 million for 2021. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.
