Petition updateIrish Government: Stop Giving Millions of Euro to Cruel Greyhound RacingUrge TDs to back Social Democrats’ motion to stop greyhound racing funding

This Wednesday, 25 November, the Social Democrats will present a motion in the Dail which calls on the government to scrap a €2.4 million increase in state funding to greyhound racing (bringing the total for 2021 to €19.2 million) and entirely phase out the grants which a majority want ended.

In the past two decades, the government has shamefully channelled more than a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers’ money into the cruel and dying greyhound “industry”. A RED C opinion poll conducted last year found that two thirds of Irish citizens want the government to stop the funding (with just 16 per cent wanting it to continue).

“If you agree that our money should NOT be propping up a loss making industry that has clear animal welfare issues, please sign and share the petition and contact your TDs and ask them to support this motion,” Social Democrats TD Holly Cairns tweeted this week.

“The greyhound racing industry has become a financial basket case and is being kept alive by State subventions each year,” Catherine Murphy TD (Kildare North, Social Democrats) added. “We need to demand that state funding is phased out and that the welfare of dogs is prioritised. #DefundGreyhoundRacing”

The motion is due to be debated on Wednesday morning at 10am. Watch the debate at https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/oireachtas-tv/dail-eireann-live/

As revealed in last year’s award-winning documentary, “RTÉ Investigates: Greyhounds Running for Their Lives”, around 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough to win races. There are also injuries and deaths at tracks. In the past six years alone, at least 1,959 greyhounds suffered injuries at tracks around Ireland and 652 were killed
