Those involved in the cruel greyhound industry have their own vets who are ready and willing to kill the dogs who are not fast enough to win.
Speaking on Clare FM recently, Petra Meyer of Clare Greyhound Sanctuary told listeners: “I’ve heard vets say that it’s no surprise that they [greyhound racers/breeders] have their own vets because most vets won’t put down a healthy dog for no reason at all.”
Shame on the vets who support this nasty industry and profit from the killing of dogs.
Petra went on to highlight that there are vets who try to help the discarded dogs, saying “I do know rescues that get a lot of greyhounds from vets because people bring them in to be put down and the vets rehome them instead and give them to a rescue.”
She added that some greyhound breeders will “pick up the phone and call a rescue” but if they are asked to wait a few weeks or a month for a space to become available, “they say ‘that’s no use to me’ and you know that that dog will be gone.”
Asked if that means the dog will be taken to a knackery, she said that they may be brought to a knackery or to a vet to be killed.
“I do know dogs are being taken to knackeries,” she said. “I’ve heard about it. I also know there are other institutions that do the same thing.”
The “RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running for Their Lives” documentary revealed that 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they are not fast enough to win races. The programme included shocking footage of greyhounds being brought to a knackery to be shot in the head. One scene showed a greyhound writhing on the ground in agony after being shot.
