“I’m calling for a ban on cruel greyhound racing and hare coursing” - A big thank you to Ricky Gervais for today adding his voice to calls for an end to greyhound racing and coursing in Ireland.
The award-winning comedian/actor/director and animal rights activist is the latest in a growing list of celebrities speaking out against the cruel greyhound industry.
Ricky - the star of After Life, The Office and record-breaking stand-up shows - expressed his support for a ban after ICABS brought to his attention the recent "RTE Investigates: Greyhounds Running For Their Lives" programme which revealed that 6,000 greyhounds are killed every year because they’re not fast enough to win races. The documentary has prompted multiple protests outside tracks, calls for a ban on greyhound racing and a boycott of all sponsors.
The RTE programme also focused on the export of Irish greyhounds to China - a country with zero animal welfare laws where greyhounds are beaten to death, boiled alive and hung on hooks at meat markets.
Ricky Gervais has previously urged the Irish Government to take action to stop the exports to China.
Quoted in the Irish Mail on Sunday in 2016, he stated: "The Irish Government should immediately ban the export of Irish dogs to China, which is internationally renowned for its barbaric treatment of animals. The annual June meat festival in Yulin, near Macau, where dogs are skinned alive before being cooked, should tell the Irish Department of Agriculture everything they need to know about the horrific fate of dogs in China. If they are unconcerned about the agony that awaits these innocent animals then the Irish Government will pay the price in terms of damage to its international reputation. If it does not put an immediate ban in place, it will be rightly viewed worldwide as a country which cares little about animal welfare or animal suffering. Every dog sent to Macau will die there. The solution is in the hands of the Irish Government. BAN IT NOW."
Sadly, the government has failed to stop the exports, with Irish greyhounds continuing to end up in China.
Ricky Gervais - a longtime supporter of campaigns against cruelty - has also backed a ban on foxhunting, saying: "It's utterly sickening that the primitive, horrific pastime of chasing foxes with packs of hounds is still happening".
Last year, with two retweets to his followers, he helped bring our "Ireland - Ban Fur Farming" action alert to over half a million people.
The previous year, thanks to a series of retweets, our 'Stay away from bullrings and bullruns' summer message reached 1.5 million on Twitter. "How the f*** is torturing a bull to death entertainment? Filthy barbaric scum #Banbullfighting,” he commented.
In 2014, he shared a link to the ICABS petitions page, which includes petitions calling for a ban on hare coursing, foxhunting, badger snaring, bullfighting and digging-out/terrierwork.
