The number of greyhounds being bred in Ireland is continuing to fall, recently published figures confirm.

In another indication of the cruel greyhound industry's ongoing demise, the 2018 figures show that litter registrations have once again dropped.

Greyhound racing website, Greyhound Star, has reported that "the decline in Irish breeding continues after figures from the Irish Coursing Club [to which racing greyhounds are registered] show 2,344 litters were registered in 2018, a fall of 97 (4.1%) on the previous year." http://greyhoundstar.co.uk/irish-breeding-continues-fall/

It went on to reveal that "over the last decade, breeding has fallen by 55 per cent".

It's not only greyhound breeding that's down. So too is attendance at tracks. The Irish Greyhound Board has revealed this week that overall attendance at the remaining 16 tracks fell last year from 514,876 to 506,142 - that's the lowest level since records began.

Also down is average race attendance, prize money from owners and sponsorship.

One thing not going down in the greyhound industry is the funding being shamefully handed over by the Irish Government. In 2018, the Irish Greyhound Board received €16 million and this was boosted by €800,000 to €16.8 million for 2019 (bringing to nearly a quarter of a billion euros the amount handed over since 2001).

ACTION ALERT

Don't attend greyhound races or fundraisers/hen parties/office parties held at greyhound tracks.

It's time for the government to bring the cruel greyhound industry to an end by stopping the millions of euros in funding that is keeping it afloat.

Join us in an appeal to Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe to stop funding the cruel greyhound industry.
