"The drugs seem to have taken over" - a greyhound trainer speaking on RTE Radio 1's Drivetime programme yesterday (6th December 2016) highlighting the issue of dog doping in Ireland's cruel greyhound industry.
At a greyhound track in Limerick, he told reporter Barry Lenihan: "If you run dogs all your life, you know when a dog is running to the best of his ability or beyond his ability. They're running beyond their ability, they don't last, they don't stay racing. They last a very short racing life - whether it's a mental thing or whether they pull the sinews off their bones. They run beyond their capacity with drugs. Totally beyond their capacity with drugs. No matter how good or fast your dog is, he will not beat a dog that's on drugs. There's a lot of people disillusioned with it."
Barry Lenihan's series of reports on the "serious concerns around the greyhound industry" (including doping, animal welfare problems, export of greyhounds to China, etc) continues today after 6pm on Drivetime. Listen live at https://www.rte.ie/radio1/
Shame on Minister Michael Creed and Minister Michael Noonan for continuing to pump millions of euros of Irish taxpayers' money into the greyhound industry despite being aware of the cruelty to animals involved. Nearly a quarter of a billion euros has been handed over to-date, including 16 million euros in the latest budget.
ACTION ALERT
Tell the Irish Government to stop wasting precious public funds on this dying industry.
