Have you ever noticed just how many books and magazines there are promoting animal cruelty…every conceivable form of hunting trapping…all activities that give pleasure to some human beings at the expense of animals who have done nothing to deserve such “recreational” horrors. Their humble lives are short and challenging enough without out making life a complete hell-on-earth for them.

Lots of publications detailing how you can extract as much suffering as possible from those defenseless beings…but not so many books or periodicals promoting the humane treatment of animals or their eventual liberation from human tyranny.

That’s one of the reasons I wrote Bad Hare Days, in which I recounted my own experience of a campaign here in Ireland, and Time to Stop Running, a novel about a hare that squares up to cruel humans. I wanted to write such books anyway, but I really hoped to redress the balance even if in a small way.

I’d encourage anyone reading this who feels the same about what’s happening to animals to consider penning a book, or booklet, on some aspect of the struggle to end animal cruelty and suffering. It doesn’t matter if you get a “traditional” publishing deal, or self-publish, or try other approaches that I know nothing about, so long as the publication gets “out there.”

If you wonder whether it’s a worthwhile project, just do a quick search for books on hunting and trapping etc and see how many show up.

I think we can counteract all that pro-animal cruelty literature by letting our creative side shine!
