When I started this petition last week I had no idea it would take on a life of its own.
I am Olivia. Just a woman from England who read a headline and felt her heart sink. And when I thought about those two girls and what they must be feeling I saw red.
I reached out to Laura Richards - Criminal Behavioural Analyst, Former Head of the Sexual Offences Section at New Scotland Yard, the woman who campaigned to make stalking and coercive control criminal offences in the UK. She replied. And this petition would not be where it is today without her.
Together we co-signed formal letters to the Prime Minister, the Lord Chancellor, the Attorney General and the Minister for Safeguarding. Together Laura has cast the net far and wide reaching out to influential lawyers, academics, advocates and media to get this petition in front of the people who need to see it.
Because this is not just one case. This is a broken system.
The victims are speaking.
One of the girls at the heart of the Fordingbridge case does not feel like a survivor. She feels like the one being punished. She lives in fear. She asked what was the point in putting me through that.
And she is not alone.
Since starting this petition survivors have been reaching out every single day. Women who were not believed. Women who were failed at every stage. Women who sat in courtrooms and watched the system protect itself instead of them. Their courage in coming forward is extraordinary. Their stories are devastating. And every single one of them deserves better than what this system has given them.
This is not one bad judge. This is not one bad sentence. This is a pattern of a system that has no formal mechanism to hold judges accountable when they fail the most vulnerable people it exists to protect.
That ends now.
Now we need letters.
