Hello everyone,

Thank you all (all 72,435 of you)* for signing the petition to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to reclassify plastic pellets as hazardous substances.

Today, the Environmental Investigation Agency (@EIA_News) delivered the petition to the IMO directly before the Sri Lankan proposal (to reclassify pellets) was discussed.

Sri Lanka gave an brilliant and impassioned speech to countries of the world, but it was unfortunately cut short by the moderators, and the issue did not receive any time for discussion.

This is, unfortunately, all too common at the IMO. Despite having an Action Plan on Marine Litter, they set aside under an hour in total to discuss the proposals that have been submitted on ways ships and fishing vessels can reduce their contribution to this problem.

However, there is good news. The proposal has been moved along to a different sub-committee for discussion in Spring 2022.

As such, please continue to share and support this public show of support that is so urgently needed.

We are already in the top 2% on change.org UK,  but imagine where we could be in Spring.

This would not have been possible without all of you.

Thank you all.

The EIA Team

*This does not match the change.org petition numbers. This is because there was a separate but linked petition run in the US which garnered 25,000 signatures.
