On Sunday, December 18, 2016, the Cairo Court of Cassation ruled to suspend Ahmed Naji’s two-year sentence on charges of “harming public morality.” The court has ordered Naji’s release pending an examination of his appeal which has been scheduled for January 1st, 2017. While the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP) applauds this decision, it continues to call upon the Egyptian government to adhere to its domestic and international obligations to guarantee freedom of expression that have been violated by the case’s prosecution.
