--In January, I attended the Transportation Committee Meeting with the NoHo Neighborhood Council. They say that Council District 2 (Paul Krekorian’s district) and LADOT met and approved a HAWK beacon for this intersection, but the city doesn’t know how to fund it and doesn’t have a timeline for installing it. A HAWK beacon uses flashing and solid yellow and red lights when pedestrians want to cross.

--On Wednesday, Feb 22, I spoke with the Principal at Oxnard St Elementary. He had a meeting in January that was organized by LAUSD. The Mayor’s office and LAPD were there as well. They discussed a stoplight. On Jan 27th, LAPD emailed him saying they would not be able to put a stoplight in at Oxnard and Cleon because there is a stoplight at Oxnard and Vineland. The Principal emailed back, asking if they could install a speed bump or do something else. LAPD has not responded to him. The Principal has not heard anything about a HAWK beacon being installed.

--On Wednesday Feb 22, LADOT workers started putting up these lights (see photo). I asked if they were HAWK beacon and was told “No they are not a HAWK beacon because they do not turn red. They just flash yellow. We are just putting in more of what you already have here.” The workers believe this was approved by LADOT. These flashing yellow lights are proven to be ineffective for pedestrian safety.

--I am currently working on setting up a meeting with City Field Officer Shannan Calland and Senior Transportation Deputy Sahag Yedalian (from Paul Krekorian’s office) to do a site visitation of this intersection.

--I have emailed and called LAPD requesting data of all the incident reports and accidents that have occurred at the intersections of Oxnard and Cleon and Oxnard and Vineland from 2013-present. I have not received a response from them.
