Install speed control measures on Wilson Boulevard

Install speed control measures on Wilson Boulevard
The Issue
One evening on Wilson Boulevard, a heartbreaking incident occurred. While walking her dog, a resident witnessed a tragic and irresponsible act of speeding that led to the death of her pet. The SUV involved was moving at an excessive speed, hit the dog, and continued driving without stopping. This hit-and-run left the homeowner without closure and serves as a grave reminder of the urgent need for safer streets in our neighborhood. Another hit and run incident occurred on Meyer Avenue 1/30/26 at 2:17 AM. A vehicle speeding through Meyer Avenue hit an Uber driver’s vehicle. Causing property damage to his work vehicle. These are two of many incidents that have occurred on both these streets. Many vehicles in the neighborhood use Wilson Boulevard and Meyer Avenue as a shortcut to get to Hooker Avenue speeding through the streets without care. Wilson Boulevard, intersecting with Myer Avenue, is a residential area where children frequently walk and families live in constant apprehension due to the unchecked speeding vehicles. It's not just a street; it’s part of a community where the safety of all pedestrians is paramount. Unfortunately, these speeding vehicles pose a direct threat, increasing the risk of fatal accidents that are entirely preventable. In light of these risks, we urge city officials in Poughkeepsie to implement effective traffic calming measures. Specifically, we are calling for the installation of speed cameras and digital speed zone signage along Wilson Boulevard and Meyer Avenue. The introduction of these measures will not only act as a deterrent to speeding but also align with similar successful interventions in comparable residential areas. Studies have shown that speed cameras significantly reduce speeding incidents. According to the National Center for Statistics and Analysis, there is an average of a 30-40% reduction in crashes due to the presence of speed cameras. Furthermore, digital speed signs have been proven to raise driver awareness and compliance with speed limits. Implementing these measures will not only protect our community by preventing potential fatalities but also provide the city with a new source of revenue that can be reinvested into community infrastructure and safety programs. Other cities have witnessed similar positive outcomes, creating safer environments for residents by tackling the pervasive issue of speeding. Join us in urging the city of Poughkeepsie to take immediate action to ensure Wilson Boulevard becomes a safe haven for families rather than a danger zone. By signing this petition, you stand with those advocating for a safer community and a system that prioritizes lives over speed.
