Install shade cloth at Mount Gravatt East Graham Lord Park
The Issue
Every day, my 15-month-old son and I visit Graham Lord Park in Mount Gravatt East, Brisbane. It's a delightful spot with great facilities meant to offer children a place to play and families a place to congregate. But once we reach the park, a glaring issue confronts us: there is absolutely no shade over the playground, making it scorchingly hot and often unusable, especially during the peak summer months.
Brisbane's climate is lovely, but the intense sun can turn pleasant outings into uncomfortable experiences, and on some days, it can even be dangerous for our little children. The UV Index often reaches high levels in Queensland, posing serious risks such as sunburn and heat stroke. According to the Cancer Council Australia, childhood sun exposure is a key determinant of future skin cancer risk.
As a parent, I know firsthand how crucial it is to have safe and welcoming outdoor spaces for children to play, explore, and grow. But as it stands, the playground equipment absorbs and retains heat, making it hazardous for delicate young skin.
Thankfully, there is a straightforward and effective solution to this problem: the installation of shade cloth structures over the playground area. Shade cloths can significantly reduce the temperature of surfaces by blocking harmful UV rays, thus offering a cooler and safer environment for children and families to enjoy.
This is not a new concept. According to various urban planning studies, playgrounds with appropriate shade structures not only encourage outdoor activity but also support public health initiatives by reducing sun damage. Moreover, several councils across Australia have already successfully implemented similar solutions.
By signing this petition, you're supporting a much-needed improvement that will benefit countless families in our community. Let's ensure that our children can enjoy their right to play safely without the risk of overheating and sun damage. We urge the Brisbane City Council to install a shade cloth over Mount Gravatt East Graham Lord Park's playground, creating a safe haven for children and peace of mind for parents like myself.
Please sign and help us bring about this essential change for our community's future.
