Install dedicated lighting at Hamilton pickleball courts
The Issue
To: The City of Hamilton, Public Works Department, and Ward Councillors
The Issue:
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in Hamilton, providing vital opportunities for outdoor recreation, community building, and physical fitness for residents of all ages. However, the outdoor pickleball courts at William Connell Park (1086 West 5th St) and T.B. McQuesten Park (1199 Upper Wentworth St) currently lack dedicated overhead lighting. Because these courts are unlit, they become unusable as soon as the sun sets, severely limiting playtime for community members during the spring, summer, and autumn months.
Why This Matters:
Accessibility for Working Residents: Many players work during daytime hours and can only utilize the courts in the evening. Adding lighting ensures equal access for everyone.
Maximizing City Infrastructure: Both William Connell and T.B. McQuesten parks are fantastic, highly utilized public spaces. Installing lights maximizes the value of the city’s existing infrastructure by extending safe usable hours.
Safety and Security: Well-lit recreational areas discourage vandalism, improve evening visibility, and ensure a safer environment for players walking to and from their vehicles.
Energy Efficiency: Modern LED lighting systems are highly energy-efficient, utilize directional focus to minimize light pollution for nearby residents, and can be set on automated timers to turn off late at night (e.g., 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM) to respect city noise and park bylaws.
Our Request:
We, the undersigned residents and park users of Hamilton, respectfully request that the City of Hamilton install automated, energy-efficient LED lighting systems at the William Connell Park and T.B. McQuesten Park outdoor pickleball courts to allow for safe, extended evening play.
