PETITION FOR THE INSTALLATION OF CCTV CAMERAS AT THE SCHOOL

 

To: The School Governing Body, Principal and School Management

 

We, the undersigned parents/guardians of learners at the school, respectfully request that the school consider installing CCTV cameras in appropriate areas around the school grounds and, where appropriate and legally permissible, inside classrooms.

 

Purpose of the Petition

 

The purpose of this request is not to spy on learners, teachers or staff, nor to invade anyone’s privacy.

 

The purpose is to provide an objective record of incidents that may occur on school premises and to assist the school in establishing the facts when disputes or allegations arise.

 

Unfortunately, when incidents occur, it can sometimes become one learner’s word against another’s, making it difficult for the school, teachers and parents to determine exactly what happened.

 

CCTV footage could:

 

Help establish the facts of an incident.
Protect learners from false accusations or misunderstandings.
Assist teachers and school management when investigating incidents.
Provide greater accountability and transparency.
Help ensure that all learners are treated fairly.
Provide parents with greater peace of mind regarding their children’s safety.

 

We understand that privacy, data protection and the dignity of learners and staff must be respected. We therefore request that any CCTV system be implemented responsibly, with appropriate policies regarding access, storage and use of footage, and in accordance with applicable South African laws and school policies.

 

OUR REQUEST

 

We respectfully ask the School Governing Body and school management to consider this proposal and engage with parents regarding the possible installation of CCTV cameras in suitable areas of the school.
