The Rainbow on Newark Avenue is closing and Hoboken's 1Republik (DBA 1Republik/26 Below) is set to be moving in.

There goes the neighborhood.

This is a massive space that will be turned into a massive characterless sports bar like the owners' other three locations.

The rejuvenation of Newark Ave is looking more and more like a Themepark Ashtray catering only to a small sliver of the population in JC, young adults looking to party. Was the point of developing a pedestrian zone simply to give more room for pizza crusts, falafel sauce, and vomit to spill or was the idea to encourage all the people of Jersey City to co-mingle?

Can Jersey City support more bars and restaurants? Sure! But a) Jersey City does not begin and end in that narrow strip outside the Grove Street Path Station. What about development in The Heights, Bergen-Lafayette, Journal Square, etc? and b) let's support more mom-and-pop operations like Roman Nose, Pet Shop, or the new Atlas that is coming in.

Mayor Fulop, please block the conversion of the Rainbow on Newark Ave into a 1Republik and encourage another type of shop (or shops!) reflecting the colorful city we are to more in.

Sincerely,

The People of Jersey City (not Hoboken)
