Avenue School Governors must halt academy transfer and hold a ballot of parents & staff

On March 29th, Governors at Avenue Primary School in Newham are due to meet to vote on transferring their community school into the hands of the Eko academy trust.
In the Governor's own consultative survey, 132 parents objected to academisation whilst just 4 stated they were in favour. Newham Council voted “to call on all governing bodies who are considering academisation to halt all steps towards academisation until and unless there has been a binding parental and staff ballot” and that “this council strongly discourages local schools who may be considering academisation”. Governors need to listen to this overwhelming opposition.
Academisation does not improve education. Avenue's Governing Body must not impose this damaging plan against the wishes of parents, staff and councillors.
Therefore, we call on the Governing Board of Avenue Primary School to halt their plans and conduct, via an independent organisation, a binding parental ballot and staff ballot on the proposal to convert the school to an Academy.
