Mary Jane Veloso celebrates birthday on January 10

church response
quezon city, Philippines

Jan 9, 2016 — We are so happy that Mary Jane is alive!

Mary Jane and her family thank each and every supporter who has been advocating for Mary Jane as a victim of human trafficking. Together, we say thank you again to Indonesian President Joko Widodo for granting Mary Jane another birthday. We continue to appeal for her to receive clemency and pardon.

The case of qualified human trafficking, illegal recruitment, and estafa of Mary Jane vs. her accused traffickers Christina Sergio and Julius Lacanilao continues in the Philippines at the Nueva Ecija Regional Trial Court. Since the Philippine courts are much slower than the Indonesian courts, we ask everyone’s continued advocacy in appealing to Indonesian leaders on Mary Jane’s behalf.

We ask for compassion for Mary Jane, as a victim of human trafficking. Clemency and pardon for Mary Jane would send a strong message of hope for migrants and trafficked persons around the world, that humanity is concerned about their welfare.

We need to keep Mary Jane’s story in front of the public as well as to continue writing letters of appeal to Indonesian President Joko Widodo for Mary Jane.

Happy Birthday, Mary Jane! We are sending prayers that you will continue to be safe and that you will be removed from death row! In celebration, we add our birthday wish: President Jokowi, please #FreeMaryJane!

We appeal to supporters to remember Mary Jane on her birthday. Intercessory and thanksgiving prayers and intentions as well as other actions for Mary Jane are greatly appreciated.

Birthday Prayer for Mary Jane

God of Love and Compassion
Today we celebrate that Human Trafficking Victim Mary Jane Veloso has reached her birthday. We give thanks that she is alive. And still we remember her tears. Her cries and prayers have been our cry.

Through Mary Jane’s experience, You have shown us what our dream is all about. We look forward to a life without fear, where we can celebrate having enough--a time when joyful smiles and exuberant laughter from our children radiate through our homes, where hunger and thirst are unknown.

As we continue to join in empathy with Mary Jane, lead us to where our hearts should be: with them whose HOPE rests upon the power of LOVE and JUSTICE. You are our Emmanuel and in this journey we know that You are with us. Gather Your people into one prayer and action, so that Justice blooms and Your Glory is known.

We give thanks for Mary Jane who has reminded us that in humble people like her, Your Grace, Mercy and Kindness are revealed. In the story of Mary Jane, we have come to know the suffering of many migrants workers and the horror of those victimized by human trafficking.

As we pause for a moment and think of Mary Jane and the many victims of human trafficking and legal maneuvers, we earnestly pray that Mary Jane be saved from the executioner’s hands, and instead allowed live in the embrace of her children. Amen.
