Just last year, we lost our mini donkey, Miss Daisy, when target shooting occurred near our pasture. Miss Daisy was our therapy animal with a prosthetic leg. She worked as a service animal with senior citizens and children in our community. Miss Daisy bolted from the continuous loud target shooting near her pasture and sadly broke her neck when she ran into a fence post..

We approached the Sheriff's Department and the township as target shooting is considered a careless and reckless use of a firearm. The Independence Township's current township ordinance does not specifically regulate target shooting in residential areas, while other neighboring area townships have very specific ordinances restricting the activity.

The current proposal before the township regarding hunting boundaries does not address our concerns related to target shooting in residential areas. The DNR states hunters must hunt 450 feet from another person's residence or agricultural building, but target shooting is not restricted.
