Include the word "Afro-Latina" in the dictionary.
Include the word "Afro-Latina" in the dictionary.
The Issue
Afro-Latina
Af·ro | \ˈa-(ˌ)frō \ La·ti·na /ləˈtēnə/
noun
1: a woman or girl who is a native or inhabitant of Latin America of African ancestry.
2: a woman or girl of Latin American origin with African ancestry living in the U.S.
Afro-Latin Americans or Black Latin Americans refers to Latin American people of significant African ancestry.
A quick search in the dictionary will result in the definition of Latina/o and Latinx yet Afro-Latina/o/x is not defined or even suggested.
Including the term "Afro-Latina" in the dictionary is about creating visibility for those who have been erased from media for far too long. The term is to acknowledge someones Blackness as a product of being of Latin-American descent. For many of us, using the terms Afro-Latina/o/x rather than simply Latina/o/x allows us to center our Blackness and not negate it.
To submit the word "Afro-Latina" and/or "Afro-Latinx" to Merriam Webster: https://www.merriam-webster.com/help/faq-addword
and to the Oxford English Dictionary please use the following link: https://public.oed.com/contribute-to-the-oed/submission-form/
