Friends and Supporters,

Our previous update on this initiative was 2 weeks ago; since then, there have only been positive and exciting developments!

  • This movement got mentioned on EDM.com, just a few weeks after our first article with The Guardian!
  • Our final policy ideas forming our proposal have been ironed out.
  • We made our first appearances at Community Board meetings, including CB#3 in Bed-Stuy and CB#1 in Upper Brooklyn.

Also,  one of the pieces we've been waiting on was the newest City Council class needed to be assigned respective committees; they completed that process late last week.

Out of 51 City Council members:

  • 8 of them are being pursued as "potentially strong strategic allies".
  • 16 are categorized as "potential moderate allies"
  • 14 are "weak/maybe allies"
  • 10 are "neutral"
  • 3 will likely be either hostile, or non-factors, and will not be contacted.

We have reached out to the 48 City Council members whose support is being sought with introductory information about our proposals. While correspondence from their offices take time, we have already received encouraging requests for more information, and follow-up meetings, from 4 City Council members! This is extremely encouraging; bills with only 1 main City Council sponsor, without opposition, can get bills passed in NYC.

These are going to be an eventful 2-3 weeks, as we wait for correspondence with other potential allying City Councilmembers, prepare to send out our full policy proposals, and deploy the next phase of our media and outreach strategies.

Please feel free to reach out via email at brianhackel94@gmail.com with any questions, comments, or concerns. Otherwise, stay safe, and party on!

Best,

Brian Hackel
