In Support of Ending the Criminal Prosecution of Kazakhstani Journalist Anastasia Akhmetov
Проблема
We, the undersigned citizens and members of the public, express our concern regarding the criminal prosecution of Kazakhstani journalist Anastasia Akhmetova.
Freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and protection against arbitrary deprivation of liberty are fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the country's international obligations.
We believe it is necessary to ensure an objective and comprehensive examination of the circumstances surrounding Anastasia Akhmetova's case, full respect for her procedural rights, and an independent assessment of the grounds for imposing a preventive measure in the form of house arrest.
We call upon the competent authorities of the Republic of Kazakhstan to:
Ensure full and unconditional respect for Anastasia Akhmetova's right to legal defense, a fair trial, and access to qualified legal assistance.
Consider, in accordance with the procedures established by law, the cancellation of the preventive measure of house arrest and the complete lifting of all restrictions.
Ensure that any allegations of possible procedural violations raised by the defense are duly examined.
Guarantee that Anastasia Akhmetova, her family members, lawyers, and individuals who publicly express their views on this case are protected from unlawful pressure or intimidation.
Provide reasoned responses to submissions made by the defense and members of the public, to the extent permitted by law.
We emphasize that public support for Anastasia Akhmetova does not constitute interference with the administration of justice.
Our goal is to uphold the rule of law, human rights, and guarantees of freedom of journalistic activity.
We call for an end to the criminal prosecution of Anastasia Akhmetova where grounds for such termination exist under the law, and for a fair resolution of her case.
