Improve safety measures for Firhouse children
The Issue
At the heart of Firhouse, a community filled with children and families, safety should be a given. Yet, recently, a tragic incident highlighted the urgent need for action. A resident of Killakee was struck and seriously injured on a pedestrian crossing next to the Delivery Road adjacent to Regan's Super Valu. This alarming event underlines a systemic issue that needs addressing to protect not only our children but all community members.
Traffic in Firhouse, particularly around the areas parallel to Killakee Grove, and on the Delivery Road, has become increasingly hazardous. The current signage is insufficient, leaving both drivers and pedestrians vulnerable. According to Transport Ireland, well-placed signs can reduce accidents by as much as 25%. Thus, increasing the visibility and number of signs is a crucial step.
Moreover, the lack of effective traffic calming measures exacerbates the danger. Speed bumps have been shown to decrease vehicle speed by up to 10 mph and drastically reduce pedestrian accidents. Additional ramps are urgently needed to slow down traffic, creating a safer environment for everyone.
Another significant issue is the misuse of the Delivery Road outside Super Valu's business hours. The delivery gate at the top of this road, if motorised and closed after hours, could significantly reduce the inappropriate use of this road, ensuring that unauthorised vehicles no longer pose a threat at night.
We are not asking for an overhaul, but for targeted interventions that together could significantly enhance safety. Implementing these changes is not just a formality but a necessary action to prevent future incidents and safeguard our community.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a safer Firhouse. Together, we can urge Super Valu and local authorities to implement these changes, ensuring that our streets are not only paths but safe havens for our children and neighbours. Please sign and help us make Firhouse a safer place for everyone.
