NICU Jaffna Admissions Details Reveal that 1/3 of 2025 deaths happened only in September and October

A pattern that deserves our attention
According to the neonatal data I obtained for Teaching Hospital Jaffna, 25 newborns died during September and October 2025 alone. That represents 34.2% — more than one-third — of the 73 neonatal deaths recorded during the year, while these two months accounted for approximately 20.6% of the year’s admissions.
September was particularly concerning, with 14 neonatal deaths among 174 admissions. October recorded another 11 deaths among 174 admissions.
The September–October figures therefore caught my attention.
The data alone cannot establish causation. But when more than one-third of the year's neonatal deaths occurred within just two months, I believe it is reasonable to ask whether the period deserves closer clinical and public-health review.
My hope is simple:
Can we look carefully at what happened during September and October 2025, understand why mortality was unusually high, and identify anything that could help prevent avoidable newborn deaths in the future?
Behind every number is a family.
Behind one of those numbers was my son.
This is why SAFE PREGNANCY SRILANKA should come to real.
