The Issue

My son struggles with what might be perceived as a mild mental illness. Unfortunately, because it isn't considered severe, his condition remains untreated. This negligence is contributing to deeper troubles, mostly fueled by emotional outbursts. Despite his desire to overcome his challenges, he lacks the positive third-party guidance necessary for his rehabilitation. This is why I'm advocating for improved mental health support following incarceration.

After release, many individuals face the harsh reality of returning to environments that undermine their mental health progress, increasing their chances of reoffending. Current aftercare services, although available, lack the comprehensive outreach and mandatory nature required. "Telecare" services, which offer mental health monitoring and treatment, have the potential to fill this crucial gap by providing constant and accessible support even in crisis situations. However, these services should be expanded to offer 24-hour crisis coaching, regular mandatory check-ins, and be readily available to all who exit the prison system.

It's crucial to acknowledge the role that untreated mental health issues play in the cycle of recidivism. Statistically, individuals with untreated mental health conditions have a high likelihood of reoffending. According to a 2017 study published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, approximately 45% of incarcerated individuals have a mental health issue, and unfortunately, many of these issues remain unaddressed upon their release.

By enhancing mental health services and making them mandatory for those with recognized psychological concerns, we provide these individuals a path towards a better quality of life. Access to continuous support and counseling could radically change lives and offer hope to those who are often marginalized and misunderstood. Such measures have the power not only to decrease recidivism rates but also to aid in the formation of safe and thriving communities.

Please help improve the quality of life for individuals like my son, and many others, by advocating for mandatory mental health care services for the formerly incarcerated.
