The Issue

Nikis Avenue in Nicosia, particularly near the EKO service station, has become a perilous stretch of road that poses a significant danger to both pedestrians and drivers alike. Recent events have thrown into sharp relief just how critical our situation has become. On September 4th, a tragic pedestrian accident occurred, starkly highlighting the everyday risks taken by those who simply wish to cross the road or drive safely to their destination.

The causes of these dangers are numerous: rampant speeding that turns the avenue into a daily racetrack, hazardous and illegal maneuvers as vehicles turn into and out of the petrol station, and nearby shops without regard for safety. There are no pedestrian crossings to protect those on foot, no median to demarcate the opposing lanes of traffic, and poor lighting exacerbates the hazards, especially at night.

The lack of adequate infrastructure coupled with apparent indifference from local authorities leaves everyone at risk. We cannot wait for another tragedy to act—immediate intervention is required to prevent further accidents and loss of life.

We, therefore, demand the implementation of the following essential road safety measures:

1. Installation of properly lit pedestrian crossings to ensure safe passage for those on foot.
2. Introduction of speed cameras along Nikis Avenue to deter excessive speeding and enforce speed limits.
3. Construction of a central island that would divide the lanes, reducing dangerous and illegal maneuvers.

This is not only about safe passage; it’s about preserving lives—ours and those of our family, friends, and fellow citizens. By signing this petition, you join us in urging the responsible authorities to take immediate, concrete action. Let us make Nikis Avenue a safer place for all.
