The Issue

Growing up, I faced challenges that I couldn't understand, leaving me feeling isolated and helpless. It wasn't until adulthood that I was finally diagnosed with my mental health issues, a revelation that had me reflecting on my childhood filled with silent struggles. As someone who continues to navigate these complexities, I am driven by the belief that no child should endure a life without the support and understanding they need. This personal journey has ignited a passion for change—change that can shape brighter futures for our children.

Just like we regularly check students’ vision and hearing, it's time we prioritize their mental health. The prevalence of mental health issues such as ADHD, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety among young people is rising alarmingly. The concerning statistics about increasing suicide rates and drug addiction among teenagers cannot be ignored. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is a leading cause of death among young people aged 10 to 24. This is why early mental health screenings in schools are crucial.

The COVID-19 pandemic saw many children lose loved ones, be it parents or grandparents, compounding trauma and grief. Yet, our institutions rarely ask children, "Are you okay?" This oversight must be corrected. Children deserve to feel heard, supported, and understood, particularly during their formative years when intervention could be life-changing.

Implementing mandatory mental health checkups in schools starting from primary education can provide early detection and treatment for mental health disorders. It’s a proactive approach to safeguard our children's future, offering them the opportunity to thrive both academically and personally. These checkups should be as routine as any other health assessments administered, ensuring a holistic approach to child development.

Additionally, the resources are available. We have a pool of qualified, yet unemployed psychologists and mental health professionals who could be instrumental in this initiative. By integrating these experts into our education system, we not only provide much-needed support for students but also create employment opportunities within the mental health sector.

This petition calls for the government to mandate and fund mental health evaluations in schools nationwide. Such a move would demonstrate a commitment to nurturing the mental well-being of the next generation, reducing the likelihood of mental health issues growing unchecked.

Join me in urging policymakers to take action now. Let’s create a supportive environment where every child can flourish. Sign this petition to show your support for implementing mental health checkups for our students.
