The Issue

The one month old Labrador Retriever puppy named Amethyst is set to be euthanized today, 04 December 2024, due to the shelter capacity of San Antonio Animal Care Services. His only crime, like so many others, is simply not having a home. His last home will be Kennel S3015, a place that will put him to sleep not due to his health or age, but merely as a result of a full shelter. One search in the public listings shows just how many other innocent animals faces the same grim fate.

Currently, there are no laws demanding a cap on shelter capacity, therefore allowing an unlimited number of animals to be taken in, many of whom may then face the risk of being euthanized due to lack of resources and space if they are not adopted in time. According to The Humane Society of the United States, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year in the US alone. However, about 3.2 million shelter animals get adopted each year and another 710,000 strays return home.

This doesn't have to be the case. We call upon our local and national legislators to enact laws regulating the admissible capacity of animal shelters. This legislation would prevent overcrowding, ensure better care for the animals, and discourage unnecessary euthanasia.

Amethyst's fate can be a call to action. Join us in our fight to safeguard the lives of innocent animals that find themselves in a shelter. It's their right to live a full life. Sign this petition now and challenge our lawmakers to take action. Together, we can change these grim statistics and provide a safer, more compassionate choice for the underprivileged animals of this country.
