Implement emergency lockdown in South Africa

The Issue

South Africa is in crisis. The continuous, heart-wrenching reports of women being killed in Ekurhuleni and across the nation have reached an alarming rate. As residents and concerned citizens, we find ourselves in an unforgivable state of emergency. These brutal acts have stripped communities of their safety, and our streets have become dangerous for women to walk.

The victims of this violence are mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends, and each lost life is a shattering blow to entire communities. With each report, with each headline, hope diminishes and fear grows. We cannot stand idly by while so many lives hang in the balance. That's why this petition, rooted in the urgent need to protect and restore safety, is more than just words; it is a call to action for immediate government intervention.

We implore President Cyril Ramaphosa to act decisively. We request that a national emergency lockdown be declared starting on 17 September 2026. This initiative is vital to channel resources towards deploying emergency services, ensuring swift responses to violent incidents, and providing comprehensive protection for our communities.

This lockdown will not only enable law enforcement to effectively address current threats but also serve as a critical measure to prevent further violence and to provide a window for comprehensive policy reassessment and community support strategies to be developed.

The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated. According to statistics published by the South African Police Service, reports of gender-based violence remain among the highest in the world, and we face a national crisis that demands bold and swift intervention.

We are aware of the potential challenges and disruptions accompanying a lockdown. However, the preservation of human life must take precedence. Protective measures during this period will need to ensure access to crucial services and supplies for all citizens.

Our demand is not just for restrictions, but for hope. Hope for neighborhoods that can be safe again, where women can live without fear. It is a plea for the sanctity of life and the security of our communities. We believe that through collective action and governmental cooperation, we can avert a looming catastrophe and chart a path towards a safer country for every citizen.

We call on you, fellow South Africans, and all allies to step forward, raise your voice, and show that we will not be silent until justice and safety are achieved. The time to act is now. Let's stand together to protect and rebuild our nation.

Sign this petition to demand immediate governmental action to safeguard the women of South Africa and restore peace to our communities.
