Make big tobacco responsible

Make big tobacco responsible
The Issue
biodegradable cigarette butts are a very good idea when thinking about the environment. millions of people smoke cigarettes, 4.6 million to be exact which makes up above 15.1% of our population. it would be almost impossible to prevent people incorrectly disposing of their butts because of how many people smoke. Making the butts biodegradable would help our Earth by cutting down on 38% of our pollution. Currently, the filters are made with 98% plastic, called cellulose acetate although they look like they are only made of cotton that is not the case. Currently, it takes anywhere between 18 months to 10 years for filters to decompose and that is depending on the conditions which are far too long to not be doing something about if you ask me, considering these little filters are the single greatest source of pollution now passing single-use Plastics IE straws. We can't make people quit smoking, however, we can change how their waste affects our home. Moving to manufacture the filters to which are biodegradable will be a huge step in helping clean up our world. Many places are moving towards biodegradable Butts in many different ways https://www.goodnet.org/articles/these-biodegradable-cigarette-filters-will-grow-into-tree
The small amounts this city does to clean up this waste whether it's properly disposed of or not is not enough to keep up is not enough to cut back on pollution.
