Thank you for your help with this attack on the Confederate Veteran, his family and his flag. The response has been terrific!!! Your voice was heard by Shriner International. Unfortunately, the outcome is inconclusive, and requires further attention. We cannot declare victory yet. Specifically, Imperial Potentate Jerry Gantt issued Special Order #5 which rescinded Special Order #4 on September 16, 2015, making it null and void. But there may be more to the story. Special Order #5 raises a question as to whether the ban on Confederate Flags is still in force. The Order references "General Order No. 1, Series 2015-2016 as it related to SHRINE PROTOCOL, 3. Flag Prohibitions" as well as provisions of Section 206.5(a)(5) of the Bylaws of Shriners International, suggesting that Special Order #4 is not needed as these other documents govern the flag issue. As of this moment, we have been unable to obtain a copy of either General Order 1, Series 2015-2015 , Shrine Protocol 3. Flag Prohibitions, or the Bylaws of Shiners International to determine IF the Confederate Flag ban is still in force. Can you help? More action may be required based on what, if any information, we are able to obtain. Please note, it is not the intention of this initiative to hurt the good works of Shriners International, however, a ban on the flag of American veterans must not stand. To continue to ban the flag as an excuse of 'hurting fundraising' is to be tone deaf to the generous people of the south who love the flag of their families, and are offended by the Shriner's action. It is our sincere hope that the documents, upon review, will determine that the ban has been lifted, especially the ban on Shrine participation in events where a Confederate Flag is displayed.
