Watchdog recently staged a raid on a slaughterhouse in Iksan that has been in operation for 20 years. They found 35 dogs living in squalid conditions, forced into cramped cages and left to dwell on waste-covered floors. Evidence such as well-kept, color-treated fur and pet accessories like cushions, kennels, and collars suggest these animals were once cherished pets.
The butcher attempted to burn the dogs’ bodies even in the midst of the raid. His defense of having only dog food in the freezer fell short when it was found to be filled with discarded dog heads and bodies.
Despite the butcher insisting they were his property, after five hours of persistent negotiation, Watchdog managed to secure the release of all 35 dogs. It has come to light that Iksan City Hall was previously aware of the facility’s function as a slaughterhouse but did not take adequate action. Fortunately, as a result of Watchdog’s intervention, the slaughterhouse is now slated for permanent closure.
The 35 dogs are now under the protective care of the Iksan City Hall, and three of them will be taken in by CARE for treatment and will be put up for adoption. The rest will be housed at the Iksan City Shelter. Alongside local volunteers, efforts are being made to find them new homes without resorting to euthanasia.
