The issue we face is both personal and a matter of our shared values of justice and human rights. We believe that the United States' decision to impose sanctions on International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane constitutes a grave attack on these values. Unjust sanctions against international bodies dedicated to pursuing justice and protecting human rights undermine confidence in the rule of law and have adverse effects on people worldwide.

The International Criminal Court plays a crucial role in addressing war crimes and crimes against humanity, serving as a final bastion of justice for victims around the globe. US sanctions against such an institution threaten the ICC's independence and generate serious international repercussions. All nations should share the common goal of cooperating to prevent war crimes and human rights violations.

Furthermore, sanctions threaten the ability of international judges to carry out their duties independently, thereby compromising judicial independence. Such actions undermine the trust and cooperation grounded in international law and instead serve to heighten factors of instability.
